Differentiating Sama from Dama
A. Wilful control of the mind when it becomes extroverted is called Sama.
--Wilful control of the senses when they became extraverted is called Dama.
--Sama refers to mind control and Dama refers to sensory control.
--Sama refers to the mastery of the mind. It also refers to mental discipline like avoiding unnecessary greed and avoiding harmful ambition and possessiveness.
--Controlling the mind from continuous interaction with world objects is called Sama. The mind always tries to extrovert. The agitated mind becomes a hindrance to the seeker. It affects the attention of the seeker.
-- To firmly harness the wild and restless mind is called Sama. Desire freeness of the mind is sama
--Mastery of the mind helps the seeker to turn within and glide easily into the higher realms of spiritual pursuit, Dama is the wilful control of the sensory organs such as eyes. Dama refers to sensory control and avoiding greed for enjoymen.t
Sense organs are gateways of the mind. These trigger most of the mental activities. Hence to manage one`s mind one must manage senses.
--sense organs are grosser so it is easy to control sense organs.
--Control must be started from gross sense organs to subtle mind.
-- If one has strong viveka and vyragya, Sama becomes effortless to him.
--with sadhana one can control senses.
--There is a limit for sensory enjoyment.
--Withdrawing the sensory organs and organs of action from the objects of the world and fixing steadfastedly in the Brahman is called Dama.
--With Sama minds unnecessary activities are controlled. The power of concentration of the mind can be increased. Mind becomes desire less.
-- With Dama sensory enjoyment will be controlled. It avoids greed for enjoyment.
